Who won the first Olympic men's triathlon gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Simon Whitfield won the first Olympic men’s triathlon gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics.

Whitfield represented Canada in the inaugural Olympic triathlon, held on 17 September 2000. He completed the swim, bicycle and running sections in 1 hour, 48 minutes and 24.02 seconds. His victory came after a sprint finish, with Switzerland’s Stephan Vuckovic taking silver and the Czech Republic’s Jan Řehula winning bronze.

The Olympic triathlon format used at Sydney consisted of a 1.5-kilometre swim, a 40-kilometre cycle, and a 10-kilometre run. This distance later became widely known as the Olympic-distance triathlon. Women’s and men’s triathlon competitions both debuted at the same Games.

Whitfield later won silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. A common mix-up is to associate Olympic triathlon’s first champion with later stars such as Alistair Brownlee or Jan Frodeno; neither competed in the inaugural Olympic race.
