Answer
Thomas Burke
Answer
Thomas Burke
Thomas Burke won the first Olympic men’s 100-metre final at the 1896 Athens Games.
Burke, an American athlete, won the final in 12.0 seconds. The 1896 race was held on a straight track at the Panathenaic Stadium, and Burke used a crouched starting position that looked unusual to many observers. This style later became standard as starting blocks and crouch starts developed.
The 1896 Olympic athletics programme did not use the same event structure or technology as modern championships. There were no electronic timing systems, and historical reports recorded times manually. Burke also won the 400 metres in Athens, making him the only competitor to take both sprint titles at those Games. The 100 metres has since become one of the Olympics’ most prominent events, but its early edition had a small field and conditions that differed substantially from today’s tightly regulated synthetic-track competitions.
