Who won the first Olympic men's 100-metre butterfly title?
Answer
Doug Russell
Answer
Doug Russell
Doug Russell won the first Olympic men's 100-metre butterfly title at Mexico City 1968.
The American swimmer finished in 55.9 seconds, setting an Olympic record and defeating fellow American Mark Spitz, who took silver. The event had previously been contested over 200 metres, so the 100-metre race was a new Olympic distance in 1968.
Russell also swam on the United States 4×100-metre medley relay team, which won gold in Mexico City. His victory came during a period when butterfly technique and training were rapidly developing at elite level.
The result is sometimes misremembered because Spitz later became one of the Games’ most famous swimmers. Spitz did not win this inaugural 100-metre Olympic title; Russell did.
