Kyle Bennett won Elite Men gold when Australia hosted the UCI BMX World Championships in Perth in 2003.
The championship was part of the UCI’s international BMX calendar, bringing together elite riders competing for world titles rather than Olympic medals or national championships. Bennett represented the United States and became the name attached to the Elite Men’s title in Perth.
The wrong options can be tempting because Warwick Stevenson was a prominent Australian BMX racer, while Dale Holmes and Thomas Allier were also major names in the sport’s elite era. However, the host nation’s rider is not automatically the winner; the 2003 Elite Men champion was Bennett.
Bennett later remained a significant figure in American BMX and won Olympic gold in the men’s BMX race at the 2008 Beijing Games. That Olympic achievement is separate from his 2003 world title, so the two victories should not be conflated.
