Who was Twitter’s first chief executive officer?

The story behind the answer

Twitter’s first chief executive officer was Jack Dorsey.

Dorsey co-founded Twitter in 2006 with Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams. The service developed from an internal project at Odeo, a podcasting company, and its first public message was posted by Dorsey on March 21, 2006.

Dorsey served as Twitter’s first CEO during its early launch period. Evan Williams later became chief executive, followed by Dick Costolo and then other leaders. This sequence can cause confusion because several co-founders held senior executive roles as Twitter grew.

Dorsey returned as CEO in 2015 after Costolo resigned. He remained in the position until November 2021, when Parag Agrawal succeeded him. Dorsey later resigned from Twitter’s board in 2022, after Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company.
