Who was Tottenham Hotspur’s youngest-ever competitive captain during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Archie Gray was Tottenham Hotspur’s youngest-ever competitive captain during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.

Gray captained Tottenham in their 3–0 defeat at Brentford on Saturday 22 August 2026. By doing so, he broke the club record previously held by Steve Perryman, who had been Tottenham’s youngest competitive captain for more than 20 years.

The record was notable because Gray was still a young player while leading the side in a Premier League match. Captaincy in English football is usually associated with older, established players, so his appointment stood out even though Tottenham began the match with a heavy defeat.

The same fixture also featured several notable debuts. Sandro Tonali, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke all made their first appearances for Tottenham. However, none of those players became the club’s youngest competitive captain; that distinction belonged to Gray.
