Who was the original voice of Mickey Mouse?

The story behind the answer

The original voice of Mickey Mouse was Walt Disney.

Walt Disney provided Mickey Mouse’s voice during the character’s earliest era, beginning with the landmark 1928 short Steamboat Willie. He remained Mickey’s principal voice for theatrical cartoons until 1946, while also shaping the character’s personality, mannerisms, and public image.

Disney occasionally returned to the role after 1946, including for The Mickey Mouse Club television series, which originally ran from 1955 to 1959. His involvement helped preserve the connection between Mickey and the studio’s founder, even after other performers assumed the regular recording duties.

Jimmy MacDonald took over the theatrical role in 1946, followed by Wayne Allwine from 1977 until 2009 and Bret Iwan from 2009 onward. Those actors are valid answers for later eras, but they were not the original voice. Mickey’s original voice is sometimes confused with the voices of Minnie Mouse or other Disney characters, yet Walt Disney voiced both Mickey and Minnie in the earliest period.
