Who was the commander of Apollo 17, the final Apollo mission to land on the Moon?
Answer
Eugene Cernan
Answer
Eugene Cernan
Eugene Cernan was the commander of Apollo 17, the final Apollo mission to land on the Moon.
Cernan and lunar module pilot Harrison Schmitt landed in the Taurus–Littrow valley on 11 December 1972. Schmitt was the only professional geologist to walk on the Moon, while Cernan was an experienced naval aviator and astronaut who had previously flown Apollo 10.
Cernan became the last person to leave the lunar surface when Apollo 17's ascent stage lifted off on 14 December 1972. He and Schmitt used the lunar rover to investigate the valley and collected valuable geological samples, including orange soil discovered near Shorty crater.
Ronald Evans remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module America. Apollo 17's return ended the Apollo lunar-landing program; no human has visited the lunar surface since that mission.
