Who commanded Apollo 11 during humanity’s first Moon landing?

The story behind the answer

Neil Armstrong commanded Apollo 11 during humanity’s first Moon landing.

Armstrong was responsible for the mission as commander, while lunar module pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin joined him on the lunar surface. Command module pilot Michael Collins remained alone in lunar orbit aboard Columbia, maintaining the spacecraft that would carry the crew home.

During the final descent, Armstrong manually piloted Eagle beyond a hazardous area and landed with limited fuel remaining. His calm decisions during this phase were crucial to completing the landing safely.

Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon, followed by Aldrin. The mission launched on July 16, 1969, landed on July 20, and returned to Earth on July 24.
