Who was the commander of Apollo 12?
Answer
Charles Conrad
Answer
Charles Conrad
Charles Conrad was the commander of Apollo 12.
Conrad led NASA's second crewed lunar landing, touching down in the Ocean of Storms on 19 November 1969. After stepping onto the surface, he made a light-hearted remark about his height, reflecting the mission's more relaxed public image after Apollo 11.
He and lunar module pilot Alan Bean explored the landing area, visited Surveyor 3 and collected geological samples. Command module pilot Richard Gordon remained aboard Yankee Clipper in lunar orbit and photographed the surface from above.
Conrad is sometimes confused with Alan Shepard, who commanded Apollo 14, or David Scott and John Young, who commanded Apollo 15 and Apollo 16. Before Apollo 12, Conrad had flown Gemini 5 and Gemini 11.
