Who was the cinematographer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception?
Answer
Wally Pfister
Answer
Wally Pfister
Wally Pfister was the cinematographer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception.
Pfister photographed Inception after working with Nolan on several earlier projects, including Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight. His work helped give the film its distinctive large-format look across city streets, dream interiors, and practical action environments.
The production used a mixture of 35 mm and large-format photography. Nolan and Pfister emphasized practical sets and in-camera effects wherever possible, including the rotating hallway fight and the snow fortress sequence. These choices helped make the dream worlds feel physically convincing.
Hoyte van Hoytema later became Nolan’s regular cinematographer, working on Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, Oppenheimer, and other projects. That later collaboration is a common reason viewers may confuse van Hoytema with Pfister when identifying Inception’s cinematographer.
