In Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, what is the name of the intelligent robot with a rectangular design?

The story behind the answer

The intelligent rectangular robot in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is named TARS.

TARS is one of the adaptable artificial-intelligence robots that assist the astronauts during the mission beyond Earth. Unlike many cinematic robots, TARS does not have a humanoid body. Its modular rectangular structure can split and pivot, allowing it to move across difficult terrain and perform practical tasks.

Bill Irwin provides TARS’s voice and motion performance. The robot is programmed with adjustable settings for honesty, humor, and other behavioral traits, which become recurring elements of its conversations with the human crew.

TARS is often mixed up with CASE, the other major robot in the mission. Both are named robots in Interstellar, but CASE is a separate machine. KIPP belongs to the earlier history of Mann’s mission, while ROM is not one of the film’s robots.
