Tom Hardy plays the RAF pilot Farrier in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.
Farrier is one of the fighter pilots sent to protect Allied troops and civilian vessels during the evacuation from Dunkirk. Hardy’s performance is largely communicated through cockpit action and radio exchanges, with the character’s identity and mission unfolding through the film’s compressed wartime structure.
Dunkirk tells its story through three interwoven time scales: the Mole over one week, the Sea over one day, and the Air over one hour. Farrier’s storyline belongs to the Air strand, although the strands eventually converge during the evacuation.
The character should not be confused with Collins, another RAF pilot played by Jack Lowden, or with civilian sailor Mr Dawson, played by Mark Rylance.
