Who was runner-up to Djokovic at the 2018 Shanghai Masters men's singles event?

The story behind the answer

Borna Ćorić was runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the 2018 Shanghai Masters men's singles event.

The final was played on 14 October 2018 at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai. Djokovic won 6–3, 6–4, breaking Ćorić once in each set and completing the tournament without losing a set or having his serve broken.

The victory gave Djokovic his fourth Shanghai title and his 32nd ATP Masters 1000 crown. It was part of a remarkable second-half resurgence: after struggling with an elbow injury earlier in the season, he had won Wimbledon and the US Open before adding Shanghai.

Ćorić's route to the final included a semifinal upset of defending champion Roger Federer. That result is a common source of confusion, because Federer was the previous Shanghai champion, while Ćorić—not Federer, Kei Nishikori, Marin Čilić or Kevin Anderson—was Djokovic's final opponent in 2018.
