Andoni Iraola was Liverpool’s manager when the club faced Newcastle United during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Liverpool played Newcastle United away on Sunday, 23 August 2026, in a match that ended 2–2. Iraola had been appointed Liverpool manager in June 2026 after leaving Bournemouth at the end of his contract.
The fixture was therefore an early test of Liverpool under a new manager. It also took place shortly after Newcastle appointed Matthias Jaissle, meaning both clubs entered the match with new head coaches compared with the previous season.
A common mix-up is Arne Slot, who had managed Liverpool before Iraola. Xabi Alonso was also a high-profile new Premier League manager in 2026–27, but he was in charge of Chelsea, not Liverpool. The answer is the manager listed for Liverpool in the season’s personnel table.
