Who was Apollo 17's lunar module pilot and the first professional scientist to walk on the Moon?
Answer
Harrison Schmitt
Answer
Harrison Schmitt
Harrison Schmitt was Apollo 17's lunar module pilot and the first professional scientist to walk on the Moon.
Schmitt was a geologist selected by NASA as part of its effort to add scientific expertise to lunar crews. He landed with commander Eugene Cernan in the lunar module Challenger on December 11, 1972, at Taurus–Littrow valley. Their work included collecting samples and investigating the valley's geological history.
Cernan became the last person to walk on the Moon when Apollo 17 ended its surface operations. Ronald Evans was the command module pilot. Schmitt is sometimes described simply as a scientist-astronaut, but his formal Apollo 17 role was lunar module pilot.
