Who translated Winnie-the-Pooh into Latin as Winnie ille Pu?

The story behind the answer

Alexander Lenard translated Winnie-the-Pooh into Latin as Winnie ille Pu. Lenard, whose Hungarian name was Lénárd Sándor, produced the translation that was first published in 1958.

The project was more than a word-for-word exercise. Lenard had to reproduce Milne’s jokes, invented expressions, childlike misunderstandings, and conversational rhythm in a classical language. The result retained the recognizable characters and situations while presenting them in Latin prose accessible to readers with the necessary language background.

The translation became famous after appearing on The New York Times Best Seller List in 1960. It is commonly identified as the first foreign-language book to reach that list and the only Latin book ever listed there. That unusual publishing achievement gave Winnie ille Pu a life separate from the English original.

Other translators are associated with important Pooh editions. Irena Tuwim produced the first Polish translation, Kubuś Puchatek, in 1938, while Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska published a later Polish version in 1986. Neither translated the Latin edition.
