What was Christopher Robin Milne’s childhood nanny’s first name?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Robin Milne’s childhood nanny was named Olive.

Olive Rand, later Olive Brockwell, cared for Christopher Robin from an early age until he entered boarding school in May 1930. Within the family, Christopher called her “Nou,” and he later described their childhood relationship as exceptionally close.

The real Christopher Robin became the basis for the child character in A. A. Milne’s Pooh stories, but the books are not a straightforward biography. Milne combined his son’s personality, his toys, family life, and imagined adventures into a fictional world.

Olive is sometimes confused with Alice because A. A. Milne’s poem “Buckingham Palace” includes the line about “Alice” marrying one of the guards. In real life, that poem referred to Olive’s marriage to Alf Brockwell; Alice was not Christopher Robin’s nanny.
