Who scored the winning penalty for Italy in the 2006 FIFA World Cup final shootout?

The story behind the answer

Fabio Grosso scored the winning penalty for Italy in the 2006 FIFA World Cup final shootout.

The final between Italy and France was tied 1–1 after 90 minutes and extra time at Berlin’s Olympiastadion on 9 July 2006. Zinedine Zidane scored for France from the spot, while Marco Materazzi equalised for Italy with a header.

Italy’s five successful penalty takers were Andrea Pirlo, Materazzi, Daniele De Rossi, Alessandro Del Piero and Grosso. France’s David Trezeguet hit the crossbar with France’s second attempt, leaving Italy with the chance to win when Grosso stepped up fifth. He sent the ball beyond goalkeeper Fabien Barthez, giving Italy a 5–3 shootout victory.

A common mix-up is Andrea Pirlo, who was named Player of the Match and took Italy’s first penalty. Grosso was the decisive scorer, however, and he had also scored Italy’s dramatic semi-final winner against Germany.
