Answer
FIFA World Cup Trophy
Answer
FIFA World Cup Trophy
The trophy awarded to FIFA World Cup winners since 1974 is the FIFA World Cup Trophy.
It replaced the Jules Rimet Trophy after Brazil won the World Cup for a third time in 1970 and was allowed to keep the original trophy permanently. FIFA commissioned a replacement for the 1974 tournament, selecting a design by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga from 53 submissions by artists in seven countries.
The current trophy depicts two human figures lifting the Earth. It is about 36.8 centimetres tall, weighs 6.175 kilograms and has a base containing malachite. Its winners’ names and years are engraved on the underside of the base.
The Jules Rimet Trophy is the main historical source of confusion: it was the earlier World Cup prize, used from 1930 through 1970. The Golden Ball is different again—it recognises the tournament’s best player. Modern champions receive a gold-plated replica, while the original FIFA World Cup Trophy remains under FIFA’s control.
