Which Italian player missed the decisive penalty in the 1994 FIFA World Cup final shootout?

The story behind the answer

Roberto Baggio missed Italy’s decisive penalty in the 1994 FIFA World Cup final shootout.

The final at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl on 17 July 1994 was the first World Cup final decided by penalties. Brazil and Italy played to a 0–0 draw through regulation time and extra time, making it the only scoreless World Cup final after 120 minutes.

Brazil led 3–2 in the shootout when Baggio took Italy’s fifth and final attempt. Italy needed him to score to keep the contest alive, but he lifted the ball over Claudio Taffarel’s goal. Brazil therefore won its fourth World Cup title. Baggio’s miss became one of the tournament’s most enduring images, even though he had carried Italy to the final with outstanding performances.

Franco Baresi and Daniele Massaro had also missed earlier Italian penalties, so they are sometimes named in answers to this question. Baggio’s was the decisive miss because it ended Italy’s chance to equalise in the shootout.
