Dominik Szoboszlai scored the last-minute penalty that gave Liverpool a 2–2 draw at Newcastle United on the 2026–27 opening weekend.
Liverpool drew 2–2 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on 23 August 2026. Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time, rescuing a point for Liverpool in a match Newcastle had appeared likely to win.
Newcastle led through Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock, while Cody Gakpo scored Liverpool’s first equaliser. The late penalty followed Victor Muñoz being fouled inside the area, allowing Szoboszlai to become the decisive scorer.
The match also marked new managerial eras for both clubs: Matthias Jaissle was in charge of Newcastle and Andoni Iraola led Liverpool. Szoboszlai’s goal is distinct from Gakpo’s because it came last and directly determined the final score.
