Who scored the first triple century in Test cricket?

The story behind the answer

Andy Sandham scored the first triple century in Test cricket. He made 325 for England against the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1930.

Sandham reached the landmark in the fourth Test of England’s Caribbean tour, batting in a timeless match that lasted nine days before being drawn. His innings helped England compile 849, while he shared major partnerships with George Gunn, Bob Wyatt and Leslie Ames. The score broke R. E. Foster’s previous Test record of 287, set in 1903.

The achievement was especially notable because it came in Sandham’s final Test match. At 39 years and 272 days, he remains the oldest player to score a Test triple century. He also made 50 in England’s second innings, giving him 375 runs in the match.

A common mix-up is to name Donald Bradman or Brian Lara: both later made famous triple centuries, but neither was first. Bradman’s 334 came in 1930, after Sandham’s 325 earlier that year.
