Who scored the first ever Premier League goal, for Sheffield United in 1992?

The story behind the answer

Brian Deane scored the first ever Premier League goal, opening Sheffield United’s match against Manchester United on 15 August 1992.

The goal arrived just five minutes into the inaugural Premier League season at Bramall Lane. Deane headed the ball past Peter Schmeichel, giving Sheffield United an early lead in a match that the hosts ultimately won 2–1. He also scored the Blades’ second goal from the penalty spot.

The goal is often mixed up with the first Premier League match or the first goal of the televised opening weekend. Sheffield United versus Manchester United was played on the competition’s opening Saturday, and Deane’s strike became the first official goal in the new league’s history.

Deane had already established himself as an important Sheffield United forward before the Premier League began. He later moved to Leeds United in 1993 for £2.9 million, then returned to Sheffield United and represented several other clubs during a long professional career.
