Which Sunderland striker was the 1999-2000 Premier League top scorer with 30 goals?

The story behind the answer

Kevin Phillips was Sunderland’s striker and the 1999–2000 Premier League top scorer with 30 goals.

Phillips scored 30 times in 36 league appearances, helping Sunderland finish seventh after promotion to the top flight. His finishing earned him the Premier League Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe, awarded to the leading goalscorer across Europe’s domestic leagues under that season’s scoring system.

The achievement was especially notable because Sunderland were not title contenders: Manchester United won the league, while Phillips outscored established stars including Alan Shearer, who finished with 23 goals, and Dwight Yorke, who scored 20. Sunderland teammate Niall Quinn was also among the club’s leading attackers but did not win the scoring title.

Phillips remains the only Englishman to win the European Golden Shoe while playing for an English club. His 30-goal total was also the highest by a Sunderland player in a Premier League season at that point.
