Who scored the first century in men's One Day International cricket?

The story behind the answer

Dennis Amiss scored the first century in men’s One Day International cricket.

Amiss made 103 for England against Australia at Old Trafford, Manchester, on 24 August 1972. It was only the second men’s ODI ever played, and the innings came on his ODI debut. England won the match by six wickets while chasing Australia’s total.

The first ODI, between Australia and England at Melbourne in 1971, produced no century: England’s John Edrich made 82, which was the first ODI fifty. Amiss therefore followed Edrich by setting the format’s first hundred a little over a year later.

Amiss later scored 137 against India in the opening match of the 1975 World Cup, briefly reclaiming the record for the highest ODI individual score after Glenn Turner passed his earlier mark. He finished with four ODI centuries in 18 matches, and also scored a century in his final ODI.
