Who scored Sunderland’s equaliser directly from a free-kick against Ipswich Town in the 2026–27 Premier League opener?

The story behind the answer

Nilson Angulo scored Sunderland’s equaliser directly from a free-kick against Ipswich Town in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

The Ecuadorian winger struck for Sunderland during the club’s 2–1 defeat at Ipswich Town on 22 August 2026. His free-kick cancelled out Emersonn’s opening goal and briefly put Sunderland level.

Angulo’s goal was historically notable because it made him the first player since Marcos Alonso for Chelsea in 2021–22 to score his club’s first goal of a Premier League season directly from a free-kick.

Sunderland ultimately lost when substitute Jack Clarke scored against his former club in the 90th minute. Ipswich therefore began their return to the top flight with a victory, while Sunderland left Portman Road without a point.
