Who scored Newcastle United’s fastest goal against Liverpool in the 2026–27 Premier League opener?

The story behind the answer

Anthony Elanga scored Newcastle United’s fastest goal against Liverpool in the 2026–27 Premier League opening round.

Elanga opened the scoring after five minutes at St James’ Park on 23 August 2026. His goal was notable because he had played 1,315 minutes without a league goal during the previous season before ending that drought immediately.

Liverpool equalised through Cody Gakpo in the 55th minute, but substitute Joe Willock restored Newcastle’s lead 110 seconds later. The match then ended 2–2 after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

The game also featured tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had played for and managed Newcastle and had also been associated with Liverpool. The dramatic draw became one of the defining matches of the opening round.
