Manchester City defeated Bournemouth 2–1 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 23 August, during the opening weekend of the 2026–27 Premier League season. Bournemouth had taken a first-half lead through Marcus Tavernier.
Marc Guéhi equalised with six minutes remaining, and Gvardiol then completed the comeback in stoppage time. The goal preserved City's perfect start despite Bournemouth leading for much of the contest.
Rayan Cherki played an important supporting role after coming off the bench, setting up both City goals. The result also ended Bournemouth's run of 18 Premier League matches without defeat. It was Bournemouth's first league loss since selling Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City in January.
