Who scored Manchester City’s late winning goal against Bournemouth in the 2026–27 opener?

The story behind the answer

Joško Gvardiol scored Manchester City’s late winning goal against Bournemouth in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

Bournemouth took the lead through Marcus Tavernier, but Manchester City turned the match around at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 23 August. Marc Guéhi equalised late, and Gvardiol then scored the decisive second goal in stoppage time.

The comeback gave Manchester City a 2–1 victory and three points. It was also a winning start for the club’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, in Premier League competition.

The two late Manchester City goals can cause confusion. Guéhi scored the equaliser, whereas Gvardiol completed the turnaround. Tavernier scored for Bournemouth and therefore was not the winning-goal scorer.
