Who scored Liverpool’s stoppage-time penalty in the 2–2 draw with Newcastle United during the 2026–27 Premier League opener?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s stoppage-time penalty in the 2–2 draw with Newcastle United during the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

Szoboszlai converted in the ninth minute of stoppage time at St James’ Park on 23 August 2026. His penalty rescued a point for Liverpool after Newcastle had twice taken the lead.

Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle an early advantage, and Cody Gakpo equalised in the second half. Joe Willock restored Newcastle’s lead shortly afterward, but Liverpool earned the penalty when Lewis Hall fouled substitute Victor Muñoz in the area.

The match also featured tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had played for and managed Newcastle and had also played for Liverpool. Szoboszlai’s late conversion became the defining moment of a dramatic 2–2 draw.
