Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s ninth-minute stoppage-time penalty against Newcastle in the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Newcastle United and Liverpool drew 2–2 at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026. Szoboszlai converted the penalty in the ninth minute of added time, rescuing a point for Liverpool.
Newcastle had taken an early lead through Anthony Elanga, who scored after only five minutes. Liverpool later levelled and Newcastle moved back in front before Szoboszlai’s late penalty produced the final 2–2 scoreline.
The match was also marked by tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had played for both clubs and managed Newcastle. A minute’s applause and large stadium displays honoured the former England captain.
