Who scored Liverpool’s ninth-minute stoppage-time equaliser against Newcastle in the 2026–27 opener?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s ninth-minute stoppage-time equaliser against Newcastle in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

Liverpool were trailing Newcastle 2–1 at St James’ Park when Victor Muñoz was fouled inside the penalty area. Szoboszlai took responsibility for the penalty and sent it into the top-left corner in the ninth minute of added time, securing a 2–2 draw.

The Hungarian midfielder’s kick completed a remarkable sequence. Newcastle had taken an early lead through Anthony Elanga, Liverpool had levelled through Cody Gakpo, and Joe Willock had then put the home side ahead again. Szoboszlai’s late penalty was therefore the fourth and final goal of the match.

The occasion also included a tribute to Kevin Keegan, who had played for both clubs and managed Newcastle. A common mix-up is assigning the equaliser to Gakpo, but Gakpo scored Liverpool’s first goal in the 55th minute. Szoboszlai’s goal came much later and was specifically a penalty in stoppage time.
