Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s late equalising penalty against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Liverpool drew 2–2 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026. Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time, rescuing a point in one of the round’s most dramatic finishes.
Newcastle had taken the lead through Anthony Elanga, while Liverpool equalised through Cody Gakpo. Joe Willock then restored Newcastle’s advantage after a long attacking run involving Yoane Wissa.
The penalty was awarded after Lewis Hall fouled Liverpool substitute Victor Muñoz in the area. The match also included tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had played for both clubs and managed Newcastle. Szoboszlai’s spot-kick was struck into the top-left corner.
