Who scored Liverpool’s late equaliser against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 Premier League opener?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s late equaliser against Newcastle United in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty at St James’ Park to make the score 2–2. His kick rescued a point for Liverpool after Newcastle had twice taken the lead.

The penalty was awarded after Lewis Hall brought down Víctor Muñoz inside the area. Referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot, allowing Szoboszlai to level the match with the final significant action.

Cody Gakpo also scored for Liverpool, but his goal came earlier in the second half from open play. That timing separates Gakpo’s goal from Szoboszlai’s decisive late penalty.
