Who scored Liverpool’s last-minute equaliser against Newcastle in the 2026–27 Premier League opener?

The story behind the answer

Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s last-minute equaliser against Newcastle in the 2026–27 Premier League opener. His stoppage-time penalty secured a 2–2 draw at St James’ Park on 23 August 2026.

Newcastle had led 2–1 after goals by Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock, while Cody Gakpo had scored Liverpool’s first equaliser. Liverpool then won a penalty after Victor Muñoz was fouled, allowing Szoboszlai to level the match.

The penalty was converted in the ninth minute of stoppage time, making it one of the opening round’s defining moments. It also gave Liverpool a point in Andoni Iraola’s first Premier League match as the club’s manager.

Szoboszlai’s goal should not be confused with Gakpo’s earlier equaliser. Gakpo restored parity during normal time, while Szoboszlai completed the comeback at the very end.
