Who scored England's penalty in the 1-0 World Cup win over Argentina in 2002?

The story behind the answer

David Beckham scored England’s penalty in the 1–0 World Cup win over Argentina in 2002.

The match was played on 7 June 2002 at the Sapporo Dome in Japan during the group stage. England were awarded a penalty after Argentina defender Mauricio Pochettino fouled Michael Owen in the area. Captain Beckham converted the kick to give England a 1–0 lead just before half-time.

The goal carried extra emotional weight because Beckham had been sent off against Argentina four years earlier. English supporters and much of the press had blamed him for the 1998 elimination, so the successful penalty was widely seen as personal redemption.

England defended their advantage through the second half and won the match. Argentina, one of the tournament favourites, failed to reach the knockout stage after drawing with Sweden in their final Group F match. England advanced and eventually reached the quarter-finals.
