Which Argentina player scored the famous 'Hand of God' goal against England in 1986?
Answer
Diego Maradona
Answer
Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona scored Argentina’s famous “Hand of God” goal against England in 1986.
The goal came in the quarter-final at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca on 22 June 1986. Early in the second half, Maradona challenged England goalkeeper Peter Shilton for a bouncing ball and secretly used his left hand to direct it into the net. Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser did not see the infringement and awarded the goal.
Maradona later described it as being scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God,” giving the incident its enduring name. Replays made clear that the goal was illegal, and Maradona acknowledged decades later that he had deliberately handled the ball.
The moment is often confused with Maradona’s second goal in the same match, the celebrated “Goal of the Century.” That goal came four minutes later, after a long dribble past several England players. Argentina won 2–1 and went on to win the tournament.
