Who scored 400 not out against England in a 2004 Test match?
Answer
Brian Lara
Answer
Brian Lara
Brian Lara scored 400 not out against England in a 2004 Test match. He reached the record in the fourth Test of the 2003–04 Wisden Trophy series at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St John's, West Indies.
Lara batted for 778 minutes and faced 582 deliveries, striking 43 fours and 4 sixes. His innings carried him past Matthew Hayden's recently established Test record of 380, made against Zimbabwe in 2003. Lara had already held the record after scoring 375 against England at the same ground in 1994.
The score was especially remarkable because Lara remained unbeaten when West Indies declared at 751 for 5. He became the first batter to reach 400 in a Test innings, and his 400 not out remains the highest individual score in men's Test cricket. A common mix-up is Lara's other famous record: his 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994 is the highest individual score in first-class cricket, not Test cricket.
