Who published the first Star Wars tabletop role-playing game, released in 1987?
Answer
West End Games
Answer
West End Games
West End Games published the first Star Wars tabletop role-playing game in 1987.
Titled Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, the game was written by Greg Costikyan and used West End Games’ proprietary D6 System. Players could create original characters and take part in adventures set in the Star Wars universe, rather than simply replaying scenes from the films. The first edition was released during the period between Return of the Jedi and the later prequel trilogy.
West End Games supported the game with many sourcebooks, adventures, and reference works. These publications became influential among Star Wars fans because they expanded the setting with detailed information about planets, aliens, vehicles, organizations, and historical events.
The game is sometimes confused with later Star Wars role-playing products from Wizards of the Coast and Fantasy Flight Games. Those companies published later systems, but West End Games created the original licensed tabletop RPG in 1987.
