Who provided the vocal effects for the robot WALL-E?

Ben Burtt provided the vocal effects and robot vocalizations for WALL-E.

Burtt was the film’s sound designer and created the expressive beeps, groans, chirps, and mechanical sounds that let the title character communicate without ordinary spoken dialogue. Director Andrew Stanton had used R2-D2 as a creative benchmark, making Burtt—already famous for designing R2-D2’s voice—a natural choice for the project.

Burtt began working on WALL-E in 2005 and experimented with robot voices for about two years. He recorded roughly 2,500 sounds for the film, including WALL-E’s vocalizations and sounds for other robots such as M-O. His work was closely integrated with the animation: new sounds helped the animators shape timing, movement, and personality.

The answer is sometimes confused with a conventional voice actor because WALL-E communicates so vividly. Ben Burtt did not simply read dialogue; he designed and performed a sound-based language. He also used carefully selected mechanical recordings, including a hand-cranked generator and an automobile starter, to give WALL-E a distinctive physical presence.
