Who voiced Shelby Forthright, the CEO of Buy n Large, in WALL-E?

The story behind the answer

Shelby Forthright, Buy n Large’s CEO, is voiced and portrayed by Fred Willard in WALL-E.

Forthright appears in prerecorded live-action advertisements and corporate videos from the era when Buy n Large evacuated humanity from Earth. Willard’s upbeat, reassuring delivery contrasts sharply with the consequences of Forthright’s plan: Earth becomes toxic, the cleanup fails, and humanity remains aboard the Axiom for centuries.

Forthright is more than a conventional voice role. WALL-E was Pixar’s first feature to include significant live-action footage, and Willard is the only major live-action performer with a speaking role in the film. His character is presented as a recognizable corporate spokesman whose cheerful promises conceal a disastrous long-term policy.

A further twist is that Forthright issued directive A113 after deciding Earth was too dangerous for recolonization. AUTO continues enforcing that directive long after Forthright is gone. The role is therefore central to the film’s criticism of consumerism, corporate power, technological dependence, and the abandonment of environmental responsibility.
