Who produced The Doors' debut album 'The Doors'?

The story behind the answer

Paul A. Rothchild produced The Doors’ debut album, The Doors. His work helped shape the record’s dramatic, focused sound and launched the band’s studio career in 1967.

Rothchild was an Elektra Records producer who became closely associated with The Doors. He worked with the band at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood, where the group recorded most of the album in a remarkably short period. The sessions captured the quartet’s live energy while allowing careful control over arrangements and sound.

The album included “Break On Through (To the Other Side),” “Light My Fire,” “The Crystal Ship,” and the extended closing performance of “The End.” Rothchild’s production emphasized the contrast between Morrison’s intense vocals, Manzarek’s keyboard parts, Krieger’s guitar, and Densmore’s fluid drumming.

Listeners sometimes confuse Rothchild with Jac Holzman, the founder of Elektra Records, or Bruce Botnick, the engineer who worked on many Doors recordings. Holzman signed and oversaw the label, while Botnick was an important recording engineer; Rothchild is the credited producer of the debut album. He continued producing most of The Doors’ subsequent classic records.
