Who plays the villain Sean Ambrose in Mission: Impossible 2?

The story behind the answer

Dougray Scott plays Sean Ambrose in Mission: Impossible 2.

Ambrose is a former IMF agent who becomes the film's main antagonist. He uses a biological weapon plot to pursue power and profit, placing him in direct opposition to Ethan Hunt. Scott portrays the character as a former operative whose knowledge of IMF methods makes him especially dangerous.

The role is distinct from Rade Šerbedžija's Dr. Nekhorvich, whose research is central to the Chimera storyline. It is also separate from later villains such as Owen Davian, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Solomon Lane, played by Sean Harris.

Mission: Impossible 2 was directed by John Woo and released in 2000. Its visual style differs from the first film through extensive slow motion, stylized action, and motorcycle sequences, but Scott's Ambrose remains grounded in the franchise's recurring idea of a former ally turning against the IMF.
