Who plays Nala in the 2019 film The Lion King?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé plays the adult Nala in the 2019 film The Lion King.

The film is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney’s 1994 traditionally animated feature. Beyoncé voices adult Nala, the lioness who becomes Simba’s partner and queen. Shahadi Wright Joseph voices young Nala, while Donald Glover voices adult Simba.

Beyoncé also contributed to the film’s companion album, The Lion King: The Gift, released in July 2019. That project was described as inspired by the film and featured artists from Africa and the African diaspora. She performed “Spirit,” one of its prominent songs.

The 2019 movie was directed by Jon Favreau and uses virtual production and computer-generated imagery rather than conventional live-action photography. It retells the central story of Simba’s exile and return to the Pride Lands.

A common mix-up is treating Beyoncé as the voice of young Nala; the younger character is voiced by Shahadi Wright Joseph.
