What was Beyoncé's first film role, played in 2001?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé's first film role was Carmen: A Hip Hopera, a 2001 MTV television film directed by Robert Townsend. She played Carmen Brown, a modern adaptation of the passionate heroine from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen.

The production relocated the story to contemporary Los Angeles and blended operatic plot elements with hip-hop and R&B music. Mekhi Phifer played Hill, the character corresponding to Don José, while Mos Def and Wyclef Jean also appeared.

The film aired on MTV in May 2001, before Beyoncé's major solo breakthrough. Her performance demonstrated acting and vocal skills beyond her work with Destiny's Child and led to more prominent movie roles.

Later credits such as Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), The Fighting Temptations (2003) and Dreamgirls (2006) are often mistakenly identified as her debut, but Carmen: A Hip Hopera came first.
