Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album exploring infidelity, race and family is Lemonade. It combined a twelve-track audio album with a film broadcast on HBO, creating a unified visual and musical narrative.
Lemonade draws on poetry, African American history, Southern imagery and personal relationships. Its songs include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up” and “Daddy Lessons.” The project was widely discussed for its treatment of Black womanhood and for its autobiographical overtones.
The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive number-one album. It received nine Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, and won Best Urban Contemporary Album. The title is often linked to the proverb about making lemonade from lemons, quoted in the project by Beyoncé’s grandmother.
