Who plays bass on Metallica's 1991 album, commonly called The Black Album?
Answer
Jason Newsted
Answer
Jason Newsted
Jason Newsted plays bass on Metallica's 1991 album, commonly called The Black Album.
Newsted joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. The Black Album was his third studio album with the band, following ...And Justice for All and the 1988 cover-collection album Garage Inc. volume one is not involved; the relevant earlier studio record was ...And Justice for All.
The Black Album's production gave the bass a more audible and substantial presence than on ...And Justice for All, whose famously reduced bass sound had been widely discussed. Newsted's playing therefore became a noticeable part of the album's heavier, fuller sound.
Newsted remained Metallica's bassist until 2001. He was later replaced by Robert Trujillo, who joined the band in 2003. Newsted's Black Album credit identifies him as the band's bassist on this landmark recording.
