What symbol appears on the cover of Metallica’s The Black Album alongside the band logo?

The story behind the answer

A coiled snake appears on the cover of Metallica’s The Black Album alongside the band logo.

The snake is associated with the Gadsden flag, whose historic motto is “Don’t Tread on Me.” That phrase also became the title of the album’s eighth track. The connection links the cover image to one of the record’s songs without making the album a concept record.

The initial cover design was extremely dark. The Metallica logo and snake emblem were embossed or printed so subtly against the black background that they could be difficult to see. This minimalist presentation helped inspire the fan nickname The Black Album, although the official title remains Metallica.

The cover is sometimes confused with earlier Metallica artwork, which often used illustrated scenes, skulls, or dramatic color. The Black Album deliberately took a much simpler visual approach. Its restrained cover became one of the most recognizable designs in heavy-metal music.
