At which 1992 awards ceremony did Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” video win Best Rock Video?

Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” video won Best Rock Video at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.

The promotional film was directed by Wayne Isham, who also worked on videos for other major rock acts. Its imagery helped present Metallica’s music to a broad television audience at the beginning of the band’s most commercially successful period.

The award is sometimes confused with the Grammy recognition received by the album itself. In 1992, Metallica won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, but that honor was for the recording rather than the “Enter Sandman” video.

The MTV award also reflected the importance of music television in the early 1990s. The album’s five commercial singles were accompanied by videos or promotional films that expanded Metallica’s visibility beyond the traditional heavy-metal audience.
